Annual Giving and Grant Strategy

The annual fund pays the bills. Let’s plan it that way.

Every year it starts over. The fall appeal goes out late, the year-end push runs on adrenaline, and by spring someone is copying a grant deadline off a foundation website at 11 p.m. The money comes in, mostly. Nobody can tell you in September what June will look like.

Annual giving and grants are two halves of one question: who keeps this place running, and how do we ask them well? We put both on a single calendar and put most of the effort into the donors you already have. A donor who renews is easier to thank, easier to upgrade, and usually cheaper to keep than any new name on a list. We have grown year-over-year annual giving at client organizations by as much as 40 percent.

What We Do

One calendar for the whole year

We map every appeal, giving day, event ask, and grant deadline by segment and channel, so your community hears from you on a rhythm instead of in bursts. Your staff can see the crunch weeks coming in July.

Retention and upgrades

We pull renewal rates by segment, find out who lapsed and why, and build a stewardship sequence your team can run: a prompt thank-you, an impact update mid-year, a personal call for first-time donors. We also look at who gets personal attention now. If only the top donors get a phone call, the family whose small gift each year comes at real sacrifice is learning where they stand. Then we plan the invitation for mid-level donors to give more.

Appeals with segmented asks

We draft or edit letters, emails, and giving-day copy so the parent of a kindergartner and an alum from forty years back are not reading the same letter with the same ask.

Grant prospecting and a submission calendar

We research foundation and corporate funders whose priorities match your work, rank them by fit, and lay out letters of inquiry, proposals, and reports on a calendar. Fewer applications, better aimed.

Proposals and a narrative library

We write and refine proposals with your program staff, pairing your numbers with the people behind them. Along the way we build a library of approved language for your mission, programs, evaluation, and budget narrative, so the next proposal starts from a solid draft instead of a blank page.

What You Walk Away With

A twelve-month giving calendar that covers appeals, giving days, and grant deadlines. Retention numbers by segment and a stewardship sequence your staff can run without us. A mid-level upgrade plan. A ranked list of grant prospects with a submission calendar. Drafted appeals and proposals, plus the narrative library for next year’s round. And a team that plans the fiscal year in summer instead of discovering it in December.

What Clients Say

TRANSCEND Advancement completely revitalized our annual giving program. Their strategy helped us retain our base while upgrading a significant portion of our mid-level donors, resulting in our most successful year yet.

We were struggling to organize our grant efforts before bringing them on. Their ability to translate our daily on-the-ground work into compelling narratives helped us secure a major foundation grant that fully funded our new initiative.

Unrestricted dollars are what let you pay staff fairly and ride out a lean grant year. If yours arrive in a scramble, let’s talk about a steadier year.
